The demands of the Common Good are often strict. But human nature is fragile. As a result, there are ethical gaps that undermine the very foundations of the Common Good. Are we condemned to live in contemplation of an abstract world of virtue while the real world is populated by vices and moral flaws? This talk explores possible solutions to this problem discussing alternatives put forward by Amartya Sen, Martha Nussbaum, and Adela Cortina, who recently introduced the term ‘aporophobia’ to talk about the phenomenon of the rejection of the poor.
