Margarita López Maya is a senior professor at the Center for Development Studies (CENDES) at the Central University of Venezuela (CUV) who specializes in the socio-political environment of Latin America, and particularly Venezuela. Her research focuses on issues including popular protests, new parties, social actors, and the Chavez era. She is a former visiting fellow at the Kellogg Institute.

Maya has written extensively on Venezuelan politics, including the 2016 book The Decline of Chavismo: Venezuela 2005-2015 (Editorial Alfa). She served as director of the Venezuelan Journal of Economics and Social Sciences, was president of the Venezuela Studies Section of the Latin American Studies Association, and was a lecturer at several national and international universities. Maya earned a PhD from CUV.
