Former visiting fellow Verónica Zubillaga (2018-19) sends several updates to share with the Kellogg community:
First, the paper she worked on during her Kellogg Institute fellowship, which was first published as Kellogg Working Paper Number 440 together with coauthor Rebecca Hanson (University of Florida), will be published in the Latin American Research Review (forthcoming, Issue 59-1. 2024). The article warmly thanks the Kellogg community, who enriched it during her time at Notre Dame.
Second, she was awarded the Edward Larocque Tinker Visiting Professorship at the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) and the Institute of Latin American Studies (ILAS) at Columbia University. There she will teach her course “Exclusion, Gender, and Mano Dura Policies: Understanding Gang Violence and Governance in Latin American Cities” in spring 2024.
Third, with former visiting fellow David Smilde (Tulane University) and Yoletty Bracho (Université Lumière Lyon 2), she has been awarded the FORD Foundation / Latin American Studies Association LASA Special Projects grant to support their project “Is Total Peace Possible for Colombia and Venezuela? A Binational Approach.” This project aims to organize a mini-conference over two days immediately following LASA Congress 2024 in Bogotá, with a final plenary session open to the public. They seek to generate a research and advocacy network that will work collaboratively to carry out research, make policy recommendations, and communicate its findings to foster public debate.
Finally, with Smilde and Hanson, after several conferences in the United States and Venezuela that involved coordinating multiple exchanges between Venezuelan and US scholars, their edited book The Paradox of Violence in Venezuela was published by the University of Pittsburgh Press, at the end of 2022.
