Faculty Fellow Susan Blum (anthropology) was quoted in an article by The Chronicle of Higher Education titled: "How Has Grading Changed Since Coronavirus Forced Classes Online? Often, It Depends on the Professor", which describes different grading approaches across institutions in the country during the current pandemic. Some of the grading approaches are based on the needs and resources available to students. One method Blum's practices is “ungrading,” which she has done for years. Instead of exams and counting points, she provides a final grade by conversing with the students about the course to asses their learning. “Grades don’t actually foster learning, and they do foster a kind of gaming the system,” she said. Her intake on low grades is that they don't “really reveal lack of learning. To me that reveals life challenges, and we have enough of that kind of inequality built into our system as it is.”
