Former Visiting Fellows Virginia Oliveros (Associate Professor, Political Science, Tulane University) and Rodrigo Zarazaga, SJ (Centro de Investigacion y Accion Social) published a research article titled, “The Most Vulnerable Poor: Clientelism Among Slum Dwellers.” This study explores the question: Are slum dwellers more involved in clientelistic arrangements than other (urban poor) voters? Clientelism, the article states, is “the personal exchange of goods and favors for political support” and has long been associated with poverty. Using survey and field data from Argentina, the study found a higher prevalence of clientelism among slum dwellers than similar non-slum dwellers.
