Keough School faculty member Ernesto Verdeja, a Kellogg Faculty Fellow, was recently featured in the Vox article “Is Israel Committing Genocide? Re-examining the Question a Year Later.”

This article examines the validity of recent accusations against Israel for committing genocide in Gaza. This discussion takes into consideration the formal definition of genocide, recent developments in South Africa’s case against Israel, and the increasing death tolls.

Verdeja argues that it would be “called a genocide, even in a narrow legal sense, for several months now,” and cites the tipping point as Israel’s ground offensive in Rafah in May. This is what he describes as a point “indicative of a broader pattern where we see a genocidal campaign really crystallizing.”

Verdeja is an associate professor of peace studies at the Kroc Institute in the Keough School of Global Affairs. His work focuses on prevention and early warning of genocide and mass atrocities, transitional justice, and political reconciliation. Verdeja has been a Kellogg faculty fellow since 2010.
