Faculty Fellows Father Dan Groody and David Lantigua were recently featured in the article “Scholars praise Fr. Gustavo Gutiérrez's prophetic vision, theological influence” honoring the passing of their associate faculty fellow Rev. Gustavo Gutierrez, OP.

After Gutiérrez’s passing in late October, dozens of tributes were posted in his honor. He was best known for his book A Theology of Liberation, which Groody described as having “combined a profound sense of the unmerited gift of God's love with the urgency of solidarity with those society considers the least important.”

Lantigua also praised the book, saying a "real and lasting contribution of Gutiérrez's work is to really think about that the option for the poor and the perspective of the poor in history. It has universal, global implications.”

Gutiérrez was a beloved Dominican priest, theologian, and father of Liberation Theology who passed away on October 22, 2024. He is best known for his zealous defense of the Church’s “preferential option for the poor."
