Faculty Fellow Tracy Kijewski-Correa commented on the aftermath of Hurricane Ian and the importance of communities becoming proactive to natural disasters. She explained that engineers update building model codes every four years providing communities access to adopt their recommendations. However, ignoring these recommendations leave communities “exceptionally vulnerable”. Kijewski-Correa believes communities can become more proactive by, “educating consumers about their risk and giving them products in the market that allow them to make choices to better protect their family, and that allow them to voluntarily upgrade their home or retrofit it”.
