While the deaths of Ukrainian civilians are rising, people have been debating whether it is a genocide, war crime, or crime against human rights that is happening in Ukraine. Faculty Fellow Ernesto Verdeja explains the definition and severity of genocide. Verdeja defines genocide as a, “group-directed violence. It’s not just about killing a lot of people; it’s about the intention of destroying that group of people.” While many public officials have called this invasion a genocide, the International Criminal Court is conducting an investigation on Russia that will conclude this debate.
