In a recent blog post for the Royal Irish Academy (RIA), Kellogg Faculty Fellow Brian O'Conchubhair explores the complexity of the Irish language.
While the European Union has pushed for “multilingualism and providing equal access to information for everybody,” institutions in Ireland have enacted laws to promote Irish. O’Conchubhair asks, “How can any proposed referenda on merging the two systems and administrations begin to address the multifaceted, much contested, topic of languages, linguistic rights and traditions, when there is little consensus or agreement in either jurisdiction?”
