Faculty Fellow Michael Coppedge (political science) was quoted in The Washington Post article titled, “The United States is Backsliding into Autocracy Under Trump, Scholars Warn.” The piece describes how the Varieties of Democracy project has documented the increasing autocratization of the United States since President Trump was elected into office.

Coppedge comments, “Executive respect for the Constitution is now at the lowest level since 1865,” referring to how the corruption, bribery, misinformation, and dictator-like administration of the past four years has skewed American political thinking and raises major concerns for the upcoming election.
