Kellogg Faculty Fellow Drew Marcantonio recently authored an article which appeared in both Bulletin of Atomic Scientists and New Security Beat, exploring the complex connection between conflict and environmental risks worldwide.
Although researchers have found that war and conflict almost always harm the environment there is not necessarily an inherent connection between peace and environmental stability. “In fact, in many cases, the two seem to move in opposite directions,” Marcantonio explains.
Through his research, Maracatonio seeks to demonstrate the ways in which peace and sustainability can be deliberately integrated to establish mutually beneficial strategies. These strategies include coordinated policies, careful metrics, and intentional alignment of ecological and social priorities.
Marcantonio is a faculty member of the Keough School of Global Affairs’ Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies. His research focuses on regenerative and durable enterprise, environmental management and policy, environmental and other forms of violence, peacebuilding, and Integral Human Ecology.
