Faculty Fellow Maurizio Albahari, professor of Anthroplogy at Notre Dame, spoke about the new migration policies in Europe in Le Monde diplomatique's article: "An End to Mediterranean Standoffs?". It discusses how in the new Italian plan, signatories would decide in advance where migrants will be sent in order to avoid keeping migrants on the Mediterranean for weeks.
Albahari added that countries would also benefit from asylum seekers as they need economic migrants for labor. Ideally, they should be placed with other migrants from the same country, or similar background.
‘[We] always risk losing focus that this is redistribution of people,’ he said, ‘Not redistribution of packages or goods.’
