Kellogg faculty fellow Michael Desch was recently featured in an article examining the fundamental shift in the relationship between the United States and European powers. 

The eight-decade-old relationship between the United States and Europe has not come without its struggles, but recent questioning of shared morals by senior Trump administration officials have left the bond between the nations in a precarious state.

Desch, who also serves as the director of the Notre Dame International Security Center, describes this turning point as a ‘watershed’ and a “sharper tear in a fraying that began with Bush 43.” This shift has left ambiguity as to the future of the relationship between the United States and Europe.

Desch is a professor of international relations, specializing in American foreign policy, international security, political thought, and world politics. Previously, he worked for the US Department of State, the Congressional Research Service, and as a staffer for a US senator.
