Faculty Fellow Ernest Morrell (English, Africana studies) is the co-author of a recent opinion piece in the Chicago Tribune entitled "Chicago Forward — Low Expectations Can Be Deadly for African American Youth." In it, he and co-authors Nell K. Duke and Mimi Rodman discuss how the education system fails to educate African-American boys and tie that failure to "the same pervasive racism that underlies the epidemic of police shootings of unarmed black men." They also describe current programs that encourage the intellectual development of African-American boys in the primary grades.
