Kellogg Faculty Fellow Carlos Jauregui recently co-edited the book Approaches to Reading Cabeza de Vaca’s Account and Other Texts, published by the Modern Language Association.
Looking at Cabeza de Vaca’s Relación and other related texts, the book challenges outdated readings that have overlooked the violence of Spanish imperialism, offering innovative and critical perspectives on colonialism, race, and gender.
The book focuses on the enslaved African Estéban in Cabeza de Vaca’s account and the Spanish women who appear in the explorers’ texts, using often overlooked roles within the stories to reframe how the texts are taught and understood.
Jauregui is a professor of Latin American literature, specializing in colonial and transatlantic studies, cultural studies, 19th-century Latin American literature, and postcolonial theory.
