Disentangling Transitions to Authoritarian Rule: Conceptualizing Autocratization as a Challenge for Comparative Research

Autocratization is not new, but in recent years it has become the subject of increasing focus in comparative research, along with the related issues of democratic backsliding, democratic erosion, democratic deconsolidation, hybridization, and democratic quality. This points to a critical challenge for comparative research: the need for more accurate delineation among multiple phenomena of transitions to autocratic rule under the umbrella-notion of autocratization.
