A rising junior majoring in architecture with a minor in sustainability, Kiara Gutierrez Forbes is currently working with Fundación Somos Ecuador (FSE) to review and update land management plans of provinces heavily affected by the 2016 earthquake. Gutierrez collaborates with local government officials and FSE representatives to identify socio-economic issues in existing land management plans with a focus on gender, interculturality and sustainability. In addition, she works to include solutions described by local community members in an FSE lead survey into the updated plans. Gutierrez is passionate about human and civil rights and hopes to dedicate her career in architecture to the development of dignified, affordable housing. She is interested in this project because it gives a voice to local members to decide what their communities will look like in the future.
