Report:
As a presenter at the 2023 international conference at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa in Kenya under the theme of “Compassion and Solidarity in the Light of the Encyclical Letter Fratelli tutti (FT) of Pope Francis (2020): African Perspectives,” three main things were so impressive. First, the reflections on the topic by various presenters offered more insights about the Church and society. For instance, I deeply understood that the aspects of community, fraternity, and friendships as propagated by Pope Francis’ 2020 encyclical, Fratelli tutti, are never an option but basic needs. These elements link us together and dispel any chances of thinking about “us” verses “them.” Secondly, the conference offered to me an avenue to link up with many scholars from different universities across the globe. From our conversations, I understood some of these scholars’ interests, topics, and projects. I learned the different ways that universities approach academics especially in the doctoral programs. Some of these conversations increased my knowledge on literature review of my own project. Finally, the joy that engrossed my professors at my alma mater, the host university, after they knew that I would soon conclude my studies abroad was inexplainable. They were proud of me and wished me well. Thus, the conference was worthwhile. I feel most indebted to the Kellogg Institute for International Studies for the grant that the Institute offered me to present at this conference.
