Book Workshop: “Electoral Politics in Africa: Change and Continuity”
Conference/Event Grant
This fall 2016 book workshop aims to provide coauthors Jaimie Bleck and Nicolas van de Walle (Cornell University) with comments on their manuscript before press submission. The book is centrally related to democratization, but will also touch on the ways that elections can (or cannot) generate better outcomes for human development. Since transitions to multi-party rule in the early 1990s, several hundred elections have been held in over 40 countries in the region. A scholarly literature has begun to emerge on these elections, but no analytical general and comparative treatment of these issues has been published in a single study. The objective of the book is to provide such a study, in order to summarize and analyze this literature, fill several important gaps, and generalize about the extent of our knowledge regarding electoral politics in Africa.
