Abigail Keaney is a political science and global affairs major assisting Professor Brian Ó Conchubhair in his work on Irish language and literature. She supports his research involving both the contemporary and historic linguistic and cultural politics of Northern Ireland, specifically the challenges to potential reunification, conflict resolution and the conception of a post-Brexit Northern Ireland. She has also assisted with work on an anthology of medieval Irish poetry.

Keaney’s research interests include the contemporary political landscape of Northern Ireland, ideas of national identity and the politicization of minority languages as well as migration and cross-border cooperation.

Related to these interests, Keaney spent the summer of 2022 in Dublin, Ireland as an intern with the Royal Irish Academy and the Keough-Naughton Institute’s ARINS Project (Analysing and Researching Ireland, North and South) an all-island initiative which explores the constitutional, institutional and policy options for Ireland, North and South, in the post-Brexit context. Keaney looks forward to developing her research skills and continuing to explore these interests in the coming year.
