Sinology in the Twenty-First Century World of Crisis” attempts to address two main topics: first the role of sinologists (scholars who focus on studying Chinese civilizations, especially their language, literature, history, and culture) during the unprecedented tension between two giant world powers, USA and China. Second, the future of sinology when China would not directly welcome democracy but try to ground their legitimacy in their own philosophical and political traditions.  Sinologists invited to Notre Dame will discuss how their expertise would help mitigate the mutual distrust between the East and the West and how genuine understanding of Chinese history and culture would help to bridge the dialogues between the two world powers.
