Juan Angel Valdez Jr. is a PhD student in the Political Science department at the University of Notre Dame, and a Doctoral Affiliate at the Kellogg Institute for International Studies. Juan received his B.A. in Political Science from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas, and will be receiving his M.A. from the University of Notre Dame in 2017. In 2016, Juan was awarded a Graduate Research Fellowship by the National Science Foundation.

His broad research interests are in the areas of American politics, political participation, political incorporation, and Latino political behavior. In particular, Juan is interested in studying the socio-political experiences of first, second, and third generation Latinos and the politics of incorporation throughout the United States. Moreover, he is also interested in transnational citizenship and identity, and the political implications generated by such identities. Juan plans to conduct field research in the continental United States for his dissertation.
