Stranger in a Foreign Land
Grants to Support Faculty Fellows' Research
"Stranger in a Foreign Land" will be a long-form (7000-9000 word) essay on the problems of climate change, conflict, and historical injustice as they intersect in the Middle East today, specifically Israel and Palestine. Though the essay will begin in research on the history of Judaism, Israel, Palestine, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the effects of climate change in the Middle East, it will be structured by a visit to Israel during the high holidays this fall, from October 1 to October 14, around the one-year anniversary of the October 7 attacks. I plan to spend about two weeks in Israel interviewing people, reflecting on my research, and collecting impressions. This essay will offer the unique perspective of an American veteran, climate philosopher, and Jewish convert, and also bring my scholarly training to bear on the subject, lending the investigation historical depth and complexity.
