As the war in Ukraine has continued for over a year, scholars have begun to beg the question– is Russia committing genocide? Time Magazine has dug into this claim, interviewing a diverse panel of experts about the most recent allegations of war crimes, the kidnapping of Ukrainian children, and attacks on civilian infrastructure.
Authors at Time Magazine worked to define genocide and uncovered the potential implications of the world community declaring officially that Russia had launched a genocide of the Ukrainian people. Faculty Fellow Ernesto Verdeja lent his expertise to the first question, noting, “the challenge of the definition according to international law is proving both that a particular person did certain crimes, and that they had the intention of destroying a group.”
