Earlier this year, former Visiting Fellow Joseph Ramos (1984-85) was voted "Economist of the Year" for 2020, a distinction awarded every year by the newspaper El Mercurio based on broad surveying of the most prominent economists in Chile.
“Brilliant, creative, histrionic, empathetic, simple, faithful to his principles, an avid reader and very close to God. All these characteristics repeat over and over again those close to when describing Joseph Ramos Quiñones,” begins the in-depth citation, as published (in Spanish) in El Mercurio in January.
Ramos is professor of economics and business administration at the University of Chile. His research areas include employment and remuneration policies, macroeconomic policy, technological policies, and productive development. Prior to joining the faculty in 1999, he worked 10 years as a senior economist in the ILO's Employment Program for Latin America and the Caribbean, advising governments of the region on employment and remuneration matters, and 17 years at ECLAC, concluding his last years as director of the Division of Productive and Business Development. He is the author of seven books and over 50 articles on employment, income distribution, macroeconomics, and economic development.
