Former Visiting Fellow John French (spring 2007) has spearheaded a project called Black Lives Matter Brazil-USA with a team of undergraduate and graduate students at Duke University, where he is professor of history. The project compares movements to defend Black lives in Brazil and the United States since the 16th century, offering a global perspective on the fight against racist police violence and structural racism and the demand for respect for the rights of Black people.
The team examined the Black Lives Matter movement in both countries and developed an exhibit based on their findings, which opened virtually in fall 2020. This year, the gallery went on display live in the Penn Pavilion on campus at Duke.
