Visiting Fellow David Smilde co-authored an opinion piece in The New York Times titled, “Qué tiene que hacer la oposición venezolana para avanzar?” The article details how Nicolás Maduro’s illegitimate government still controls most of Venezuela’s resources, institutions, security, and policies, and offers ways the democratic opposition can regain control.
The article argues that “Comprehensive and well-prepared discussions between representatives of the Maduro regime and the democratic opposition provide the best available route to pave the way for a democratic transition. For those discussions to be effective, space, time, and confidentiality are required, not immediate transparency.”
