Liberte, Securite, Parite: Women's Political Representation and Crime
Grants to Support Faculty Fellows' Research
This proposal seeks funding for data entry on the presence of women in local councils in Indonesia. We plan to use these data to examine whether increasing the political representation of women can affect crimes against women. Analysis of existing data from India suggests that implementing a gender quota has a large impact on crime reporting by victims, but that increasing women’s representation thereafter has no additional impact. Analysis of the Indonesian data will enable us to compare two different quota systems to see whether these patterns are generalizable. Once these data are available, we will also be able to examine the impact of women’s representation on other outcomes such as the composition of local government spending or the provision of public services.
