Rocco Macchiavello is an associate professor in management at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). His research interests lie at the intersection of development, organizational and industrial economics. His research covers a range of topics (relational contracts, vertical integration, supply chain, lending models, risk management, management and productivity), countries (Bangladesh, Chile, Costa Rica, Colombia, Ethiopia, India, Kenya, Myanmar, Pakistan, and Rwanda), and sectors (coffee, flowers, dairy, and garments).

Macchiavello’s current research addresses industrial zones and policy in emerging markets, markets and firms in weakly institutionalized environments, organized crime, and international drug trafficking. He has collaborated with numerous government agencies, international organizations, social enterprises, and large companies in his research.

He is a lead academic for the International Growth Centre’s (IGC) Myanmar Country Program and a research affiliate with the Bureau for Research and Economic Analysis of Development (BREAD), the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), and Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA). His work has been widely published, and he is an associate editor for the Journal of Development Economics, Economic Development and Cultural Change, and Economica.

He was previously a post-doctoral fellow at Nuffield College at Oxford University and Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, and a professor of economics at Warwick University.

Macchiavello earned a Bsc from the University of Genoa, an Msc Economics from DELTA in Paris, and a PhD from LSE.
