"Party Pluralism and Regime Survival in Latin America”

Theories of regime change have claimed that party pluralism can help stabilize dictatorships and destabilize presidential democracies. Based on evidence for Latin America between 1945 and 2010, Pérez-Liñán, in work with Natán Skigin, shows that pluralism only undermines authoritarian rulers—and it does so by promoting democratization.
