Former Kellogg Doctoral Affiliate Luis Schenoni (PhD '20) has just published his book Bringing War Back In: Victory, Defeat, and the State in Nineteenth-Century Latin America with Cambridge University Press.
The book provides a new theory that connects war and state formation while incorporating the contingency of warfare and long-term impacts of war outcomes. The book demonstrates that the nineteenth-century wars in Latin America triggered state building. The outcomes of these wars affected the legitimacy and continuance of these state-building efforts and the capacity of states in this region continue to reflect these processes. Schenoni used comparative historical analysis and cutting-edge social science methods to provide a comprehensive picture.
Additionally, Schenoni has recently been promoted to associate professor at the Department of Political Science at University College London. He works on state-building and international conflict with a focus on Latin America.
Congratulations Luis!
