Visiting Fellow Francisco Rodríguez has authored a new article, “What Venezuela’s Opposition Can Learn from Suriname,” published by Chatham House on Aug. 18. In it, he compares opposition to authoritarian leaders in the two countries and argues that “the decision to participate in an election is not about assigning legitimacy, but about choosing a terrain in which to contest power from an authoritarian regime.”

Rodríguez is the founder and director of Oil for Venezuela, a nonprofit organization that seeks to provide depoliticized, transparent, and sustainable solutions to the country’s humanitarian crisis.
