Faculty Fellow Daniel Philpott (political science) was quoted in an America Magazine - The Jesuit Review article titled, “Is Joe Biden Repeating the Mistakes of the Past in Afghanistan? Catholic Commentators Weigh in.” The article dissects the appraisals and critiques of President Biden’s decision to withdraw the remaining US troops from Taliban-run Afghanistan.
Philpott recognized the importance of pulling troops out but also commented, “The Taliban will continue to harbor terrorists who will pursue attacks upon U.S. soldiers and civilians. It will continue to repress the religious freedom of Afghanistan citizens, including that of Muslims, Christians and members of other faiths. It will continue to deny women the opportunity to develop their talents. Religion will continue to matter in international affairs. Therefore, we will have to develop new strategies to defend our security and protect human rights.”
