Former Visiting Fellow John French (spring 2007) has received the Sérgio Buarque de Holanda Prize in 2021 for the Best Book in the Social Sciences from the Brazil Section of the Latin American Studies Association for his latest book Lula and His Politics of Cunning: From Metalworker to President of Brazil (University of North Carolina Press, 2020), which he worked on during his Kellogg Institute fellowship.
The book has reviews published in Foreign Affairs and Jacobin. The University of North Carolina Press Blog interviewed French about the book, and historian Alex Lichtenstein of conducted a video interview of him for the Labor and Working-Class History Association, available on YouTube.
French is professor of history at Duke University.
