Former Visiting Fellow Amy Erica Smith coauthored an analysis piece in The Washington Post about the recent election of Jair Bolsonaro to the Brazilian presidency. The article explores the effects of this election result on the levels of tolerance and respect for democracy in Brazil. It notes that democratic cynicism was on the rise before the election, and could be perpetuated by Bolsonaro's presidential policies.
