Jan Hoffman French (Fall ’05), assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Richmond, received a 2011 National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Summer Stipend award, which will fund her study of the role federal lawyers and anthropologists play in resolving conflicts—often concerning environmental issues—in areas in Brazil occupied by ethnic minorities, such as descendants of fugitive slave communities and indigenous peoples.
