Former Dissertation Year Fellow Tahir Kilavuz (political science , PhD 2019) co-authored an article titled: "Algerians Have Been Protesting For a Year. Here’s What You Need To Know" for the Washington Post's Monkey Cage. In it, he describes how protests in Algeria last year were able to bring down then-Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika. Nevertheless, problems such as corruption, lack of economic development and civil rights still pertain. Algerians are still actively taking the streets each week in demand of change, freedom and dignity.
