Matelena Gemechu ‘27

Matelena Gemechu, a sophomore at the University of Notre Dame majoring in neuroscience and behavior, is driven by a strong passion for global health and a commitment to working with women in communities such as Ethiopia. Aspiring to become a physician and researcher, she is dedicated to addressing healthcare disparities in underrepresented populations. She seeks to explore the intersections of health, education, culture, and socio-economic factors in East Africa that impact women's health outcomes. Her journey, shaped by firsthand experiences, has ignited her desire to advocate for health equity and contribute to transformative changes in healthcare. She aims to translate research discoveries into tangible applications within medicine, ensuring that no one is left behind due to systemic barriers. Through her studies in Neuroscience and Behavior, she is committed to actively engaging with and advocating for the well-being of underserved populations, ultimately working toward a more inclusive and equitable healthcare system for all.
