About

Mary Clare Elliot is a senior from South Bend, Indiana majoring in history and Spanish, and minoring in business economics and accounting. She is currently working with Professor Debra Javeline, an associate professor in the Department of Political Science, on an article that aims to systematically prove the lack of scientifically-based recommendations as to where humans should relocate when homes become uninhabitable due to climate change. Elliot and fellow International Scholar, Kate Kirwan, are realizing the systematic review/meta-analysis which is the basis for the article and are writing the article’s methodology section. The article’s goal is to inspire scientists to generate concrete recommendations as to where humans should move in light of climate-induced migration.

In addition to her research through ISP, Elliot is writing a History Honors Thesis under the supervision of History Professor Ted Beatty. Her research focuses on the trajectory of North American banks in Chile during Salvador Allende’s presidency (1970-1972). She spent this past summer in Chile doing research for her thesis with a grant from the Franco Family Institute for Liberal Arts and the Public Good.

Last summer, Elliot worked at a pottery factory in Granada, Spain, as a part of the Foreign Language Internship Program with the Center for the Study of Languages and Cultures. She spent the 2024-25 academic year studying at the University of Alcala in Alcala de Henares, Spain on a leave of absence from the University of Notre Dame.
