Cosponsored Lecture: "The Courage of Giving Refuge"
Marguerite (Maggy) Barankitse will share her personal journey of providing refuge and reflect on the leadership needed for social change.
Maggy is the 2016 recipient of the Aurora Prize and was in 2008 named the Opus Prize Laureate. In 1993, Maggy was working for the Catholic Bishop of Ruyigi in eastern Burundi, when Tutsis stormed the Bishop's residence and killed 72 Hutus. Amid the chaos, Maggy saved 25 children. Driven by hope and faith, Maggy founded Maison Shalom, and has raised and provided safe haven for over 200,000 children. Now, forced into exile from her home, she works with Burundi refugees in Rwanda.
Cosponsored with the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, and the Keough School of Global Affairs.
