Conference Report:

Through the generous support of the Kellogg Institute, I was able to attende the East-West Center International Graduate Student Conference (IGSC) from February 16-18, 2023 in Honolulu, Hawaii. I presented a working paper entitled “Supporting Inclusive Leadership Through Developing Salient Leaders’ Identities” with my collaborator, Gretchen Alther. We received helpful feedback on the paper from conference participants and intend to continue on our collaboration and submit the article for publication to the Journal of Leadership Education. We’ve also built off the momentum from this conference by submitting an updated abstract to the annual International Leadership Association conference in Vancouver, British Columbia in October 2023.

Beyond developing our paper, the IGSC also provided me the opportunity to strengthen and expand my academic and professional network. I was able to connect and reconnect with scholars of Southeast Asia, who I expect will be helpful in accessing organizations in the region to conduct case studies with during my dissertation research. I also had the opportunity to conduct two interviews on peacetech while I was in Hawaii that I will be able to use as data for my Master’s Thesis in Sociology.

Attending this conference helped me develop my research, expand my network, and improve my academic presentation skills. I hope that my participation in this conference has planted seeds for future collaborations/synergies between the Kellogg Institute and the East-West Center. I’m grateful for the Kellogg Institute’s generous support of my conference travel.
