Presentation: “Conservation and Social Justice: Socioeconomic Impacts of REDD+ Projects in Colombia”

REPORT:

As part of my International Conservation class, I had the opportunity to present a work-in progress paper, titled *"Conservation and Social Justice: Socioeconomic Impacts of REDD+ Projects in Colombia."* This research explores the intersection of conservation efforts and social justice, specifically assessing the socioeconomic impacts of REDD+ projects on Colombian communities. My aim was to bring attention to the often over looked social and economic dimensions of these projects, which are critical to developing fair and sustainable agreements that address the needs and rights of local populations involved in conservation efforts.

Goals and Insights

Through my presentation, I hoped to spotlight the socioeconomic challenges linked with REDD+ initiatives. These aspects are frequently underrepresented in sustainability reports, yet they are essential for ensuring fair treatment and equitable resource distribution among impacted communities. The conference provided a platform to shed light on these issues and contribute to a broader dialogue on sustainable conservation practices.

Key Takeaways and Connections

Participating in the FLARE Annual Meeting allowed me to connect with forestry sector experts focused on the convergence of conservation and human development. The insights I gained were invaluable for advancing my research, as they deepened my understanding of global conservation frameworks and provided me with new perspectives on the integration of socioeconomic justice within environmental initiatives. Additionally, discussions with other researchers highlighted diverse approaches and methodologies that could enhance the effectiveness of REDD+ projects in Colombia and similar regions.
