The Common Good Initiative: Haiti

International Educational Opportunity Grant
Grant Year
2013

The Common Good Initiative (CGI) is a community-based learning program for graduate and professional students at Notre Dame that offers participants fully funded 8-week summer internships or 7–10 day educational immersion trips in impoverished communities in the United States and internationally. This grant will fund four graduate students to take part in a trip to Haiti (May 27–June 4, 2014). In the Haiti Immersion, the CGI will partner with the Notre Dame Haiti Program to immerse participants into the program’s work to eradicate lymphatic +ilariasis in Léogâne and the country at-large. The trip is structured to expose students to the many personal and structural realities of global health and human development work. Accompanied by the CGI Program Manager, participants will investigate the intersection of global health concerns and poverty through educational meetings with the ND Haiti Program staff, patients, community leaders, NGOs, universities, local citizens and more. Most importantly, they will learn about struggles and injustices in Léogâne and surrounding communities directly from those facing them.
