Historicizing Human Rights in Mexico
Graduate Research Grant
I plan to visit the archives in Guadalajara and Mexico City in order to historicize human rights in Mexico. I will do this by examining the political life and activism of Rosario Ibarra and the organization she helped establish, Comité Eureka. Ibarra and Comité Eureka's work began as a search for the politically detained and disappeared in Mexico during the Dirty War of the 1970s and it changed and transformed human rights policies in Mexico. On September 1978, for example, they helped pass the Amnesty Law in the Mexican Senate, which helped free over one hundred and forty prisoners.
