Rev. Ernest Bartell, CSC, founding executive director and longtime faculty fellow of the Kellogg Institute for International Studies, died Thursday, Apr. 16 after a long illness. He was 88.
"Fr. Ernie dedicated himself to building an intellectual community that would address big and important questions, and point to ways we can improve the quality of life people enjoy. As a priest and an economist, he had a special passion for finding ways to address the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable in our world," said Rev. Robert Dowd, CSC, his friend, colleague, and brother in Holy Cross. "The Kellogg Institute is in many ways a legacy of his vision and creativity."
The committal at Holy Cross Cemetery will include local Holy Cross members only. At a later date, when family, friends and former colleagues can travel and gather together, there will be a Memorial Mass at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, which will be livestreamed, as customary.
The Kellogg Institute has created several webpages honoring the memory of Fr. Ernie, with a slideshow of photos, links to various articles and tributes, and an opportunity for visitors to contribute their own remembrances of him. Click here for the memorial tribute pages.
