Congratulations to former Kellogg Institute Doctoral Affiliate Leonor Taiano Campoverde '21 (PhD, Romance Languages & Literatures, Spanish), who has published a new book with Albatros Ediciones in Valencia. The monograph, Alabanzas Sospechosas. Máscaras imperiales y posturas novohispanas en la corte de Gaspar de la Cerda, was the recipient of the Albatros Award granted by Sigma Delta Pi and Albatros Ediciones.
The book examines the relationship between the imperial mask of Viceroy Gaspar de la Cerda and the New Spanish posture of the writers who benefited from its protection. The study alludes to the work of several authors, including Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Francisco de Ayerra, among many others. Taiano identifies how this corpus can be perceived as an example of Spanish colonial cultural production written during the last decade of the 17th century.
Taiano Campoverde is an assistant professor of Spanish at Carson Newman University. In addition to her PhD earned at Notre Dame, she holds a doctorate in humanities and social sciences from the University of Tromsø, Norway.
