Jackson Oxler ‘22

Jackson Oxler is a senior in the International Scholars Program and the international development studies concentration. Over the summer of 2021, Oxler conducted field research in Queens, New York City on the challenges immigrants face related to housing. His work focused on the neighborhoods of Jackson Heights, Corona, and Elmhurst - three of the top five neighborhoods of immigrant populations in NYC. Oxler interviewed immigrants from around the world on their experiences with finding and affording housing, their relationship to government and policy, and their perceptions on community development. His capstone will focus on their lived experiences, structural violence in housing policy, and the differences between community revitalization and gentrification. Oxler’s thesis will expand on these themes while including a comparative study between New York and South Bend.

The summer after his first year, Oxler received a Summer Language Abroad grant to study Spanish in Spain through full immersion. In working with Fr. Bob Dowd and Tim Scully with the International Scholars Program, Oxler conducted research on migrant and refugee inclusion, as well as educational policy research. Through a program with the Keough School of Global Affairs, Oxler travelled to Berlin, Germany to study how the country responded to the large influx of refugees seeking asylum in Europe. He also received a Kellogg/Kroc Undergraduate Research Grant to fund his fieldwork in New York City.
