Artists in Motion: Illustrations of Perilous Journeys, Art for Change by Eritrean Refugees

A public panel discussion by Faculty Fellow Rahul Oka, Drea Howenstein, Ed Grode, and Angela Wells about the project, human rights issues, and the Jesuit Refugee Service.

In addition to the paintings, there are also photographs of the artists and community members. In Eritrea, many of the painters fled grave human rights abuses, ranging from torture to forced military conscription. The work of the artists, who range in age from 13 to 45, are being shown in hopes to share their stories, the stories of their friends, and to pass on information about the dangerous choices they face.

Rahul Oka, Kellogg Faculty fellow and Ford Family Assistant Professor in the Department of  Anthropology; Drea Howenstein, professor of art education and sculpture, School of the Art Institute of Chicago; Ed Grode, ’71M.A. and documentarian about refugee life; and Angela Wells, former communications officer for the Jesuit Refugee Service in Eastern Africa and  current communications officer for the Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs at Fordham University in New York City.

Light refreshments will be served.  The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
