Politicization of the Military in Eroding Democracies
2026-2027My proposed project builds on my recent research on civil-military relations in declining democracies. I plan to study the military’s role in democratic decline, focusing specifically on how anti-democratic leaders seek to align the military with their party or movement by politicizing it internally. Efforts to turn the military, or factions therein, into partisan allies is an essential, albeit understudied, feature of democratic erosion.
